Vonage Now Offers Free Calls to Bangladesh

[IMPORTANT UPDATE: Vonage has recently delisted Bangladesh from their Plan Look-up Table. But, Dhaka landline numbers are still shown as being under the "Call Asia" plan if you manually check a phone number. I am getting conflicting reports as to whether or not Vonage has cancelled their unlimited calling to Bangladesh and started charging 19 cents a minute. Customers such as myself whose family heavily relies on this plan have not received any warning or notice of its discontinuation. This is not how Vonage should be treating their loyal customers. I can no longer recommend Vonage in good conscience. More updates as I get more details.]

I wish I found this out before my parents spent hundreds of dollars a month calling me in Bangladesh. Vonage – the internet phone company with the annoyingly catchy song in its ads – now offers free calls to Bangladesh as part of its Call Asia international calling plan. My family already uses Vonage – I gave it as a gift to my mom and dad almost two years ago so they could keep in touch with me while I was studying at Notre Dame.

For ten bucks a month more, I just added the Call Asia plan which gives them unlimited calling anytime to all Dhaka and Chittagong landlines (but not any cellphones). I double checked to make sure it works with landline numbers in regions like Baridhara, Shantinagar, and Gulshan (where my relatives live). After setting it up for my dad online – I had him give me a call. The call was surprisingly clear – better than the phone cards my other relatives use. It was even better than many of my local calls to cellphones.

VonageScreenshot

What’s really neat is that Vonage also offers things like free call conferencing. So, after talking for a bit my dad call-conferenced my aunt into the conversation who lived elsewhere in Canada. All of that at no additional cost or per minute charges. I spent most of the conversation going “wow”. This solution is also ten times better than my use of Skype – whose quality is heavily dependent on the bandwidth I get on my end. With Vonage, my family can take full advantage of the DSL line we have back in Canada and just call me on a Dhaka landline instead.

I know I am coming off sounding like a commercial for Vonage. I am not affiliated with them nor am I getting paid by Vonage for this glowing praise. I’m just completely amazed that something like this exists.

  4. 4 Shawn

I don’t know – but if you go to their site, you can check to see what regions are and are not included.

  5. 5 khaled

he is lier…………….but it not free call to bangladesh……..

  6. 6 Shawn

Hey Khaled, are you confusing the adsense link with the link to Vonage? Because those are two different things.

It’s not free as in $0. Vonage is free as in it is a flat (not per minute) rate. You pay a flat rate per month and you get to talk to landlines in Dhaka and a few other cities as much as you want 24/7.

Here’s the link in case you missed it in the article itself:
    http://vonage.com/lp/US/worldone/

Just check the call asia plan section for Bangladesh.

    Cheers.

  7. 7 khaled

i tried again with vonage but the connection said is not true………………..it’s not adviseable. he is a great lier

    Hey Khaled,

I tried emailing you directly – but you didn’t give a real email address when you submitted your comment.

The simple fact is my parents have been using this plan on Vonage for four months now and they have been able to talk to me as much as they want in Dhaka for one flat price with no additional charge.

    If you go to:
    http://www.vonage.com/lp/US/worldone/#commentForm

And click on “which plan is right for you?”, you can see Bangladesh (Chittagong) and Bangladesh (Dhaka) clearly listed as free unlimited calls. There is even a form you can type a Bangladesh phone number to confirm if it works or not.

I’ve also attached a screenshot of that page so I can be as transparent as possible. I don’t work for Vonage so I can’t help you more than that. Nor do I get paid by Vonage. All I know is that what is listed on their website and what is listed on my parents phone bill for the past four months.

    Cheers.

    Shawn,

You are absolutely right. I (in toronto) usually talk to my brother in Florida and he often call parents and it’s a 3-way calling . Call quality is fantastic and only USD$10/month.

Wish vonage starts the service in Canada. Looking forward to it.

    regd.

how do i make free calls or any way to cheap calls to bangladesh cell?

  11. 11 Shawn

I have no idea unfortunately. Using Vonage, my parents call me for about 9 cents a minute to my Bangladesh cellphone. But I dunno anything better/cheaper than that. I wish the Vonage offer of unlimited calls extended to Bangladeshi cellphones. That would make life easier and cheaper for my family.

Hey Azad, I have no idea. I heard that UAE blocks VOIP by law – so you might be out of luck…

  17. 17 sheplu

    Hello Shawn,
You are right everything about “Vonage”. I am in new york and call dhaka, canada,uk,singapore and all over us as a local unlimited call to all my friends & family. I am using this almost 2 years now. I used to pay $24.99 per month for unlimited call to us,canada. Then few days after that unlimited call to uk and some europen country added automaticly without any extra charge. Then they offer me unlimited asia call with extra $10. I thought why not? I usedto use phone card to call my friends and family. every month I spend more then $150. Now I only pay $34.99 + tax And called every month more then 4000 international min. + more then 3000 local(us) min.

  18. 18 Rahgir Nabi

Hey Shawn, could you email me and tell me what the costs are? I am wondering if I would have to stack up any other plans to get the $10 a month international deal. Thanks a lot bro,

  19. 19 siraj

hi i like 2make free call bangladash

  20. 20 Famid

Hope Vonage start Asia plan soon in Canada……

  21. 21 shanto

it will be great for this oper

  22. 22 ucffl

yeah this is great plan. 2 my relatives in florida has vonage asia plan. it costs $35 per month. You can call dhaka and chittagong land line only. service is great.
you can also check out this website
    http://yupeephone.com/monthly_unlimited.htm
they apparently offer both land and mobile call for 24.99 to bangladesh.I never used it,so i dont know if it is legit or not.

  23. 23 Mithel

Guys vonage took bangladesh out of the list..

  24. 24 Shawn

Hey Mithel – I kind of got scared when I read your comment.

If you enter a Bangladesh number in the look up tool – it is still listed in the Call Asia plan. I also checked the latest bill – still covered. PHEW!

I hope that delisting Bangladesh was a glitch and not something more sinister (read: screwing the customer) on the part of Vonage.

  25. 25 fahim

NEWS VONAGE IS TAKING BANGLADESH OUT FROM HIS CALL ASIA PLAN. PLEASE LET EVERY BODY KNOW OTHER WISE VOANGE WILL CHARGE 19/CENTS A MIN.

  26. 26 Shawn

Oh Boy. I hope you’re wrong Fahim. My family relies on this phone plan as if it was their life blood. I don’t know what I’d do without this plan :-(

  27. 27 Waqar

    Mithel and Fahim are right.

I was trying to get Vonage last week. Bangladesh is not on the list. However, I checked with my home number with their look-up search box, that number is covered under Asia and World plan. It could be a glich or something intentional.

Do you guys know what is the next cheapest way of calling Dhaka landlines ?

  28. 28 Shawn

Hey Waqar, I keep checking the phone number lookup thing all the time. I’m quite worried that bangladesh will be truly delisted. I also keep checking my phone bill. Thus far, Bangladeshhs is still covered.

If Vonage decides to cut Bangladesh – I’m not sure what my family will switch to. Skype? Maybe back to cheap calling cards?

  32. 32 Sabbir

    Hello All,
I guess the service is still on as I just checked with a Chittagong number and it’s still shows free in World plan & Asia Plan so yeah I guess it’s still free with that. IF not plz let me know. Take care all.

  33. 33 ZaY

Some you guys here seem totally airheaded to me coz most of you guys are simply making comments wihtout reading what actually Vonage have on their site.
Only one guy that I found here who said Vonage is liar and Yes thats right ! Vonage is liar and they were tryin to screw their loyal customers for fact.I spoke to them couple of times over phone and had to force the account manager to cancel my freakin account with them.
Though they offered many other benifits and features at the time of my account cancellation but my answer was simply NO coz I just couldnt manage myself to deal with a company that I cant trust anymore nor I can let them get into my Bank Account. Sorry ..No Way!!!
They are still sending me alot of mails and calling me every other day as if I ever change my mind and reinstate my account with them, but unless they have the same Asia Plan including Bangladesh as it was, there is no point to speak to them anymore, I said.

  34. 34 Raz

Currently I am using one Vonage line since last four months. It’s Call Asia plan with $ 35/month+tax, which included Dhaka and Chittagong unlimited call to land line. They are not charging more than $ 35/month + tax if I don’t make call to cell phones. And cell phone call cost is $ 0.09/min.

Also one of my friend using Vonage’s same services since January ‘08.

  35. 35 Jamal

This is an excerpt from an email I received from Vonage:

“Currently Bangladesh is a part of Call Asia or Enhanced World Plan and will still have the ability to call Bangladesh at their current rates until it is officially removed from the plan. Please note that Vonage is currently in the process of removing Bangladesh from the Call Asia and Enhanced World Plans. We evaluate all of our offers and pricing on a periodic basis and make changes accordingly so that we can offer high quality service at great rates. We look forward to a providing you the savings, features and service you deserve.”

It looks like Bangladesh has not been dropped from the calling plan yet, but will likely be dropped sometime in the near future.

Bangladesh will be officially removed on Sept. 15th, 2009. Here’s the letter I received today:

    Dear Customer,

We would like to share with you some important information regarding your calling plan. Recently, we updated our Vonage(R) Enhanced World and Call Asia international calling plans and effective September 15, 2009, calls to Bangladesh will no longer be included in your plan.

What does this mean to you? Beginning September 15, 2009, you will be charged $0.09 per minute for calls to landlines and mobile phones in Bangladesh. Our $0.09 per minute rate is one of the lowest in the industry. And remember, with Vonage when you call internationally, you never pay a surcharge or additional fees.

If our updated Vonage® Enhanced World and Call Asia international calling plans change your need for an unlimited international calling plan, we recommend you consider switching to our Residential Premium Unlimited Plan for $24.99 per month. Our Residential Premium Unlimited Plan includes unlimited local and long distance calling in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico; unlimited calls to landline phones in Italy, France, Spain, UK, and Ireland; and 25 calling features like Call Waiting, Voicemail and Caller ID. Access your online account at http://www.vonage.com to explore all your calling plan options and update your calling plan according to your needs.

We’re also enhancing our 411 Directory Assistance service to include 411 Direct Connect. With 411 Direct Connect, when you dial 411 from your Vonage phone you’ll be directly connected to the residential or business listing you’ve requested at the new rate of $1.49, effective August 17, 2009. Remember, Vonage 411 is not just about phone numbers. You can also continue dialing 411 from your Vonage phone to access movie listings, airline flight times, ATM locations and more…all for $1.49 per 411 call!

We strive to provide an excellent customer experience and want to be sure you’re getting the best value from your Vonage phone service. If you would like to discuss calling plan options or have any questions, please call us at 1-VONAGE-HELP (1-866-243-4357). We operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. One of our Customer Care representatives will be happy to assist you.
